In the Rehearsal Room

Brian’s work begins with dramatic action: what one person does to another, how the other person responds, and how that exchange changes the moment, the scene, and the play. The question is not simply what a character feels, but what they are doing, to whom, and why it matters now.

Whether directing a new musical, a large-scale revival, or an intimate contemporary play, he looks for the human event inside the theatrical form. Music, movement, design, and scale matter because they sharpen that action and bring the audience closer to the people living through it.

His rehearsal rooms are collaborative and rigorous, asking actors to stay in the moment, listen and respond, and pursue the scene through specific, changing tactics. The goal is work that is clear, active, and alive rather than an emotional journey performed in isolation.
